What Mehndi is…

Traditionally mehndi is the application of henna designs to the body which is practiced all over the world, primarily in South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. In these regions customs include engagements and weddings. Before a wedding, a “Night of Henna” exists to bless the bride and celebrate the marriage. The groom’s initials are hidden in the mehndi and he tries to find them on the wedding night. Also, henna is applied to a pregnant woman in her third trimester and after the birth to deter evil spirits.

Doing mehndi

The artist…

I bring my experience as a visual artist to my mehndi. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration and have been doing henna since 2004. I love experimenting with different styles and am always learning about new tricks and techniques. To me, mehndi is one of the most beautiful forms of body art and the great thing is that it’s temporary, so you can change it as often as you like!

Henna during pregnancy…

My favorite kind of mehndi is on pregnant bellies. I did my own when I was pregnant (now that was a challenge!). It’s an amazing time in a mother’s life and I view mehndi as a great way to celebrate not only future birth of a baby but the birth of a mother as well. So many baby showers focus on the baby and not the mother, so I like to create an atmosphere that shows the mother just how special she is as well. Father’s too! Henna isn’t just for women.

Wedding Henna…

Bridal mehndi is also very special. I hired someone else to do mine (Anna Felkers of Grand Rapids, MI) as well as had her come to the reception and do designs on the guests. For me and everyone at my wedding, it was a really wonderful way to celebrate. Now I hope to be able to do the same for the people of Denver. It would be an honor to be a part of your special day.

Photography…

I also have been quite interested in photography since the birth of my daughter. I believe she’s the most photographed baby in existence! I have won honorable mentions in nationwide contests. I have been interested in doing portraiture as well as “First Family Portraits” with a newborn. The great thing about the first family portraits is that I can come to you. It’s difficult enough to find time to shower when you have a newborn, much less go to a studio to get photos taken. I have props and backgrounds that I can situate in your home. For more information about my photo packages, please see “Pricing.”

Private Parties…

I would love to make your next gathering special! Your guests will love the originality of having a henna artist. It’s a great party favor to have your guests go home with a personalized design that will last for weeks. I have many party packages available and am willing to cater to your needs. Suggestions for parties include birthday parties, sleepovers, graduation, prom, bridal showers, and baby showers. You can also have a henna party where mehndi is the main attraction.
